Academic Qualifications
Academically Qualified
In order to meet the requirements of AACSB Standard #10, the School referred to the following values and needs in determining faculty qualifications:
- Consistent with the Mission: “We value high quality teaching and recognize that business and economics research, whether applied, basic or teaching-related is essential to that end. “
- Consistent with the Mission: The School “offers a work-friendly, MBA program which focuses on executive leadership and teamwork;”
- The School expects all tenure and tenure-track faculty in the School of Business & Economics to meet the requirements to teach graduate core courses.
Accordingly the School adopted the following policy to determine the academic qualifications of faculty to teach in the School’s programs.
- Academic Credentials:
- Faculty must have earned a doctoral degree in the area in which the individual teaches.
- If a faculty has earned a doctoral degree in a business field, but not the primary teaching field, faculty must be able to document the academic or professional development which will provide a basis to teach, conduct research and provide service in the teaching field.
- If a faculty has earned a doctoral degree outside business, but the primary teaching field incorporates the field of the degree, the faculty member must document the academic preparation in teaching field.
- If a faculty has specialized coursework in the field of primary teaching responsibilities, but no research doctoral degree, faculty must document the academic coursework and professional development which will provide a basis to teach, conduct research and provide service in the teaching field.
- If a faculty has earned a doctor degree outside of business and primary teaching responsibilities do not incorporate the area of academic preparation, but the faculty member have completed additional coursework or personal study sufficient to provide a base for teaching, research, and service required by the school.
- Currency:
- In order to maintain currency to teach in the faculty member’s discipline, in the previous five-year period, the individual must have published the following:
- three peer reviewed journal articles in the teaching field or
- two peer refereed journal articles and presented two peer reviewed papers in the teaching field and/or two peer reviewed presentations in at academic meetings in the teaching field.
- This requirement is waived for faculty members during the first five years of employment at IU Northwest.
- Satisfactory progress towards the minimum standard must be met during this period for continued reappointment. Further, the rate of progress expected from the faculty member increases with the rank the faculty member holds.
- In order to qualify as a peer- reviewed journal article, the article may be include contributions to
- to practice or
- to discipline-based scholarship
- learning and pedagogy,
- and be published in an outlet that meets the definition of scholarly publications in the School’s Annual Evaluation System.
- The standards identified above are intended to be “safe-haven” rules providing a rigorous standard designed to eliminate all controversy (if met). Faculty members seeking credit for any alternative intellectual contributions deemed equivalent may submit a request for an evaluation by the Promotion and Tenure Committee of the School as provided in the Annual Evaluation System.
- Special situations
- Faculty holding full -time administrative appointments shall be academically qualified in the teaching field within five years after returning to teaching.
Any faculty member who takes an approved medical/family leave of absence will have the period of absence added to the five years to compensate for the leave.
