Indiana University Northwest celebrates Juneteenth

Commemorative events marking the federal holiday to take place in June

Throughout the month of June, Indiana University Northwest will celebrate Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

The IU Northwest Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs will host multiple events on campus — from food, dance, culture, film screenings, workshops and more.

Juneteenth Activities

All events and activities are free.

All Month • Emancipation Display

Anderson Library Conference Center Lobby

Visit the library lobby display case to learn more about the Juneteenth holiday and its importance to this nation. Learn about former slave John Eubanks, a Gary resident and Civil War veteran. (Display curated by campus archivist Jeremy Pekarek.)

May 30 to June 21 • 21-Day Racial Equity Juneteenth Challenge

Participate in the 21-Day Racial Equity Juneteenth Challenge by selecting one short activity per day to deepen your understanding of the history of Juneteenth.

Participants are encouraged to pick up a Juneteenth workbook from the Anderson Library circulation desk, keep track of what they have learned and share during weekly Zoom sessions: June 6, 13 and 20 at 3 p.m.


June 13 • IU Northwest Kick-off Event

Anderson Library Conference Center Courtyard, IU Northwest • 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Commemorate African American freedom and honor the history of Juneteenth by attending IU Northwest’s Kick-off Event, featuring free food, music, history and Juneteenth giveaway items.


June 14 • Line Dancing Class

Anderson Library Conference Center, room 105 • 2 to 3 p.m.

Have some fun and attend a line dancing class by a local instructor. (Co-hosted with IU Northwest Human Resources)


June 15 • Movie Screening: Emancipation

Anderson Library Conference Center, room 105 • 1 p.m.

Watch Emancipation, a 2022 American historical action thriller film, set in the 1860s after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to end most slavery in the United States. The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua and co-produced by Will Smith.


June 16 & June 17 • JustLeadership USA Emerging Leadership Workshop

Anderson Library Conference Center, room 105 • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A two-day workshop focused on grassroots-level advocacy for policy changes to reduce the rates of recidivism and an individual’s readjustment to life after incarceration.

This training is targeted towards individuals or families impacted by the criminal justice system.

June 17 • 7 p.m. | June 18 • 2:30 p.m. | South Shore Dance Alliance performance: Freedom in America: Conversation in Movement Juxtaposition

Arts & Sciences Theater, Arts & Sciences Building

Built around the articles contained the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Freedom in America: Conversation in Movement Juxtaposition examines the contradictions in America's concept of Freedom with Movement and spoken work. Features IU Northwest student NiKyle Scott and alumna Cheyanne Johnson.
