Indiana University Northwest welcomes faculty, staff back to campus

Wednesday, August 04, 2021

Indiana University Northwest faculty and staff reconnected, recharged and reflected at the RedHawks Return Celebration on Monday, August 2.

The day-long campus celebration was a way to welcome back many of the IU Northwest employees who have been working remotely for the last 15+ months, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To prepare for the academic year that begins in a few short weeks, and to ensure student success, the faculty and staff have returned to campus,” said Chancellor Ken Iwama. “Our students have told us time and time again that they value an in-person experience. We owe them a dynamic environment that prioritizes our mission to provide a high-quality education by providing them opportunities to connect, thrive and soar.”

Faculty and staff were treated to complimentary breakfast provided by local vendor, Bevi Food Truck, which served flavored coffees, mochas, Italian sodas, and pastries. Celebration attendees enjoyed their treats alongside some music played by Billy Foster, pianist and adjunct professor.

Lunch was also complimentary, provided by Cheesn Food Truck serving gourmet grilled cheeses, and Las Mamacitas, a taco and quesadilla food truck. Valpo Velvet offered dessert with scoops of ice cream.

Afternoon entertainment was provided by DJ Nunya, and attendees experienced a form of social, collaborative art by actively participating in the School of Arts “Stick and Tape” exhibit. Through the art installation, faculty and staff were encouraged to tape sticks together, creating a large, three-dimensional structure. The exhibit was led by Professor Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford.

Attendees were also encouraged to share their “pandemic story” with WIUN radio, the IU Northwest campus radio station.

As a sign of solidarity, Chancellor Iwama wore a red, Indiana-shaped pin donning the message, ‘We are in this together,’ a promise he has repeatedly stated since arriving at IU Northwest in August 2020.

“This pin symbolizes the strength and support of the IU Northwest community,” Iwama said. “But this pin also signifies how far we have come. Thanks to my colleague’s commitment and dedication, and the guidance of our medical experts at Indiana University, we are back together again, re-establishing our human community to support our students and each other in a uniquely, personal way—a way that makes regional campuses, like IU Northwest, great.”

The fall 2021 academic semester begins Monday, August 23.
