Indiana University Northwest awards scholarships to nearly 350 incoming first-year students

Tuesday, June 22, 2021

Scholarships total nearly half a million dollars in financial assistance

Indiana University Northwest awarded scholarships totaling $470,625 to 346 graduating high school seniors admitted as first-year students this fall. The value of individual awards ranges from $1,000 to all tuition and fees per academic year; each scholarship is renewable for up to four years of study.

"Part of our commitment to students is to make their education rewarding—and affordable," said Dorothy Frink, director of the Office of Admissions. "We believe in the transformative power of higher education, and will do everything we can to ensure that the cost of obtaining a college degree does not stand in the way of our students achieving their dreams."

The scholarship recipients hail from 36 high schools across Northwest Indiana, with the largest number of awards granted to 2021 graduates from the following schools:

  • Crown Point High School
  • Lake Central High School
  • Portage High School
  • Kankakee Valley High School
  • Lowell High School
  • Munster High School

Additional assistance available

According to Frink, these admissions-based scholarships represent just a fraction of the financial assistance available to incoming, and returning, students. “IU Northwest, the IU Foundation, and other organizations offer scholarships for athletics, specific degree programs, city of residence, special interests, and more. Scholarships are also offered to transfer students and students over the age of 24,” said Frink, noting that financial assistance can reduce the overall “sticker” price for a degree.

She encourages all prospective students interested in enrolling in August to file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the federal deadline of June 30, 2021. “This is the first and most important step in determining your eligibility for financial assistance for the fall 2021 semester, including many scholarships,” added Frink.
