Office of Counseling Services supports a healthy student body
Free and confidential counseling helps students manage personal struggles for a better academic experience
Monday Oct 21, 2013
Indiana University Northwest’s Office of Counseling Services is dedicated to assisting and supporting students while they are enrolled at IU Northwest. Located in Hawthorn Hall (room 201) the center offers individual as well as group counseling sessions. All IU Northwest students who are enrolled at IU Northwest are eligible for free counseling sessions with a licensed social worker in the counseling center.
It is not uncommon for students to feel overwhelmed by academics, relationships, finances or other personal situations that often translate into depression and/or anxiety. The licensed professionals in the counseling center provide confidential counseling sessions to help students manage their personal lives and make better and healthier life decisions.
Each session is confidential and does not become part of a student’s permanent record. Unless students sign a release form, no one can access their counseling records.
“The hallmark of a well-run counseling office is confidentiality” says Counseling center director Barbara Dahl, “we take it very seriously and never disclose any information without specific permission from our clients.”
Counselors are also equipped to handle problems like domestic abuse and threats by working with the IU Police Department - Northwest and faculty members to ensure the safety of the campus.
The Counseling Center also advises students to manage their online profiles and treat all social media posts as if they were face-to-face. Disturbing or suicidal messages should not be ignored just because they are posted online.
Students who are not sure if they should consider counseling can go onto the Counseling Center’s website and take the assessment to determine their needs. Brochures and pamphlets discussing depression, anxiety, domestic violence, Alcoholics Anonymous, and more are available in the Counseling Center waiting area.
Counselors are available by appointment only Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
