IU Northwest’s women’s basketball team’s 74-51 win over Trinity Christian College earned women’s basketball head coach Ryan Shelton his 100th career victory.
In 2007-08, Coach Shelton took over a failing program with just six student-athletes and battled through a difficult 0-24 season as the new head coach. Refusing to back down from a challenge, Shelton committed himself to the program and the recruitment of high-character student-athletes in an effort to save the program.
Shelton is now in his seventh season as head women's basketball coach at Indiana University Northwest. From 2008-12, Shelton led the RedHawks to four consecutive winning seasons, averaging more than 20 wins per season. During that time, IU Northwest’s women’s basketball earned recognition as one of the nation’s most improved and successful programs.
In Shelton’s five previous seasons as coach, IU Northwest women’s basketball has made four national tournament appearances while his players have earned five All-American selections, four A.I.I. Conference Player of the Year selections, 10 A.I.I. All-Conference selections and two NAIA Champions of Character Awards in addition to many other numerous sportsmanship and academic awards.
Shelton has the most wins and highest winning percentage (.612) amongst all coaches in IU Northwest’s history with an overall career record now standing at 101-85.
