Traffic detours in store for IU Northwest commuters
Construction near the intersection of 35th and Broadway
Thursday Mar 01, 2012
Indiana University Northwest students, visitors and employees will experience some traffic detours in coming weeks due to sewer installation work near the campus entrance at 35thAvenue and Broadway. This work is being conducted by the Gary Sanitary District and the Indiana Department of Transportation. The university expects for all work to be complete by the end of May.
The exact closures are as follows:
- Ongoing: 35th Avenue will be closed between Broadway and Massachusetts Street.
- Ongoing: 35th Avenue will be closed between Broadway and Washington Street.
Officials say the campus community still will have access to all parking lots, including the lot east of Broadway, but must enter along 34th Street during the 35th Street closures.
Due to an expected increase in traffic due to the detour, all IU Northwest students, employees, visitors, and motorists are advised to use EXTREME CAUTION when crossing Broadway on foot or driving through the crosswalk areas on Broadway.
Pedestrians should always use the yellow LED crossing lights and make sure that all lanes of traffic have stopped before attempting to cross. Motorists are asked to obey the speed limit, keep close watch for pedestrians, and proceed with utmost care when driving through a crossing area.
For the duration of the construction, the RedHawk Shuttle, which normally transports visitors with a university ID between the campus and the Park & Ride lot at Arts on Grant, will not be in service.
