Wednesday Oct 10, 2012
When the Indiana University Northwest Lady RedHawks volleyball team takes the floor against the IU Kokomo Cougars at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Savannah Center Gymnasium, they’ll be decked out in pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
At the 2nd Annual Spike Out Breast Cancer Awareness game, the opposing team will change their colors to white, offering spectators a united display of support and a reminder that early detection saves lives.
The IU Northwest Office of Athletics also urges spectators to wear pink. Students, staff and faculty members are admitted to the game free with their ID. The admission fee for all others is $3.
The Lady RedHawks volleyball squad consists of eight active players and is led by juniors Tabitha Newcomb, Kristen Kenney, and Courtney Byrd. Also joining this year's squad is Purdue North Central transfer Stacy Pruitt. The RedHawks' freshman contingent includes Justice Anderson, Isabel Sandoval, Kassandra Ballah and Elexus Carroll. Redshirting this season are junior Petra Faught and freshman Sarah Fleming.
The RedHawks are led by Head Coach Christine Ward. Ward, a Philadelphia native and Whiting resident, competed in women's volleyball at Community College (Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference) and Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association. Ward also competed in Women's Volleyball at Chestnut Hill College (NCAA Div. III and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Philadelphia).
