Professor Emeritus of History Ron Cohen authored book on Woody Guthrie
Tuesday Sep 11, 2012
The Indiana University Northwest campus and the greater Northwest Indiana community are invited to a book signing event from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24 in the Gallery for Contemporary Art, located in the Savannah Center.
The event is in honor of the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie, touted as the most famous and influential folk music composer and professor in U.S. history. IU Northwest Professor Emeritus of History Ron Cohen, who has authored many books on radical history and folk music, will sign copies of his latest work, “Woody Guthrie, Writing America’s Songs.”
At the signing, student Rhonda “Red” Woodville will perform Guthrie’s songs. Guthrie’s best-known song, “This Land is Your Land,” has become the country’s unofficial anthem.
Using letters, autobiographical excerpts and reflections, Cohen discusses Guthrie’s influence on American history and culture in the book, which is available through Amazon.com.
