Indiana University Northwest invites the campus and the greater Northwest Indiana community to the Summer Arts & Music Festival on Saturday, June 9, hosted on the Gary campus.

Art Exhibit & Reception

The fun-filled afternoon for all ages will begin at 2 p.m. in the Gallery for Contemporary Art, located in the Savannah Center, with the opening of the Department of Fine Arts Alumni Exhibit, “12x12 in 2012”. The exhibit will feature artwork from more than 60 alumni from the IU Northwest Department of Fine Arts program.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet some of the exhibiting artists and hear about their inspiration at the Artists’ Reception, which will take place from 2 until 4 p.m. near the Gallery in the lobby of the Savannah Center.

The 12x12 in 2012 exhibit contains artwork no larger than 12 inches wide by 12 inches high, and will feature paintings, drawings, photographs, ceramics, sculptures, and more.

Ann Fritz, Art Gallery Director, was able to secure artwork from recent alumni, as well as from those who graduated as early as 1975.

The artwork comes from local alumni artists, as well as from those who live around the nation, including art from California, Ohio, and New York City.

The 12x12 in 2012 exhibit will be open to the public from June 4 – 20.

Music on the Lawn

The relaxing tunes of The South Shore Brass Band will be heard following the Artists’ Reception in the IU Northwest campus courtyard from 4 until 5 p.m. on June 9. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the soulful sounds of cornets, horns, trombones, tubas, and more.

The South Shore Brass Band, conducted by Charles Mann, is a professional musical organization based in Northwest Indiana along the south shore of Lake Michigan. The band has attracted some of the finest musicians from around the South Shore and South Side of Chicago.

The IU Northwest Arts & Music Festival is free and open to the public; children are welcome. Free visitor parking will be available in all campus parking areas.  Additional campus site information and directions are available at www.iun.edu/maps.

In case of inclement weather, the South Shore Brass Band concert will take place in the Savannah Center Gymnasium.

Event sponsors include the Gallery for Contemporary Art, the Department of Fine Arts, the Indiana University Northwest Alumni Association, and the Office of the Chancellor.
