FAQS
IU Northwest Office Of Career Services
What are the benefits of using Career Services?
When students use Career Services, they are choosing to participate in a purposeful career planning process. We will assist students as they go through a self-assessment process, explore occupations through career research, match a career to a major, and then seek out experiential education and conduct a strategic job search. This process is done with the support of experienced career professionals.
When should a student see us?
Career planning is an important process, so we encourage students to begin using our services their first semester. Studies show that students who have a clear career goal are much more motivated and less likely to drop out of school. The Career Services office is located in the Moraine Student Center room 101.
Note: Due to Covid-19 our Career Services staff are only available for phone and zoom appointments. Please email us at careernw@iun.edu or call at 219-980-6650 to schedule an appointment.
What should a student do need if they have questions about choosing a major or best choice of a career?
We suggest that they come to Career Services for a career assessment to ensure they are going down the right career path. Contact us to via phone or email to schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Counselor to get started. These appointments may be scheduled to help a student review assessment results, develop a career action plan and answer questions.

How can a students and alumni find employment?
Career Services uses Handshake, an online career management system that allows students to build out a profile using their resume and apply for part-time and full-time jobs, internships, and Cooperative Education positions posted by local, state, national, and international employers. Enrolled students already have an account created for them! To claim the account, they can login to Handshake through the IU Northwest Career Services webpage."
Do you have career fairs?
We host a career fair every spring semester. The purpose fair is to allow employers (typically 50+) and IU Northwest students/alumni to network. Professional attire is strongly encouraged and students should bring plenty of copies of their resumes. If a student or an alum doesn't have professional attire, we have a professional clothing closet available with free business professional attire (contact the office for details). Upcoming career events will be posted on the Career Services webpage and detailed announcements are posted on the Daily Redhawk.
Note: Due to Covid-19 we will be providing virtual career fairs, career networking events and workshops. Details regarding these events will be advertised on the Daily Redhawk, Career Services homepage and Handshake.
Do you charge any fees for services?
We are a free resource to all students and alumni.
Can you guarantee that students and alumni will have a job when they graduate?
What we can guarantee is to provide services to help students and alumni choose a career, plan and prepare for their job search, and provide opportunities for students and alumni to network and interview with employers. We teach students and alumni how to conduct a self-directed job search, which will help them not only when they graduate, but in years to come.
