With production and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine now underway across the country, Indiana University is actively preparing its campus communities for this significant step in battling the pandemic. The first rounds of vaccines are being shipped to health systems across the state. IU School of Medicine trained student workers to administer the vaccine.
Frontline health care workers and the students supporting the vaccine effort are the first eligible within the IU community to receive the vaccine, with inoculations beginning this week. Others, including essential workers and high-risk populations, will then be offered the protection in a phased approach, with timing based on the number of vaccines received and the response to the initial offering.
Chicago’s Emergency Travel Order includes the state of Indiana. However, students, faculty and staff are exempt from this order. This means that students, faculty, and staff who are Illinois residents can travel to/from the IU Northwest campus without having to quarantine when crossing the state line.
IU will begin mitigation COVID-19 testing of IU Northwest students, faculty and staff. Individuals will be randomly chosen throughout the year to be tested. You may be selected multiple times over the semester. Selected individuals will receive an email notifying them how to schedule their test and additional information about the testing process.
IU mitigation testing, which will involve a saliva test, will be conducted at on-campus sites. (**Please note: IU mitigation testing is a separate and different process from COVID-19 symptomatic testing.**)
Immediately following mitigation testing, you can continue on with your normal routine (since this testing is for asymptomatic individuals), unless you have been exposed, have symptoms or have already been told to quarantine due to being a confirmed close contact.
Test results will return in three to five days:
If your test is negative: Continue with your normal routine.
If your test is positive: You will receive detailed instructions from IUH on isolation and next steps, which includes downloading the Twistle app (Apple Store or Google Play). Through Twistle, you'll receive daily check-ins from an IUH provider to ask about your symptoms and report any concerns or worsening symptoms.
Students, faculty and staff who do not come to campus this semester may be exempt from mitigation testing. A link to an exemption request form will be made available upon contact.
Why is this being done?
The goal of mitigation testing is to quickly identify and isolate any individuals who test positive for COVID-19, including asymptomatic carriers of the disease. The testing will also deliver a clearer picture of how the virus may be spreading, including early detection of potential "COVID clusters."
While all of us at IU Northwest are hopeful you remain healthy, we wish to remind you of the steps you should take if you begin to feel sick. If on campus, we kindly ask that you leave the premise immediately.
Steps to follow
Please note that these steps apply no matter where you first experience symptoms, on campus or elsewhere. However, if you experience COVID-19 symptoms while on campus, please leave the premises immediately.
1. Log into ONE.iu.edu (or your IU Mobile app).
Search: COVID
Select: IU Health Virtual Screening Clinic
-OR-
Download the IU Health Virtual Visits app (App Store or Google Play)
Search: IU Health Virtual Visits
2. Once you have logged-in, complete the information & symptom checker.
After you have completed the information, you will be referred virtually to an IU Health (IUH) nurse for additional screening.
If the IUH nurse believes the symptoms are COVID-19 related, you will receive instructions on how to contact the IU Northwest Testing Center. (NOTE: The IU Northwest testing center is NOT the IU Northwest Health & Wellness Clinic.)
To contact the IU Northwest Testing Center, please call: 219-980-7250. You will receive instruction about where and when to appear at the IU Northwest Testing Center. Please CALL AHEAD before arriving at the testing center.
At this point, you will receive an email and/or text message with a “sick slip” from the IUH nurse. This “sick slip” MUST be presented with your Indiana University ID, upon arrival at the IU Northwest Testing Center.
When you have arrived at the IU Northwest Testing Center, park in the assigned parking space. Call 219-980-7250 to indicate you are onsite. Please stay in your car.
The IUH nurse will exit the building to meet you. Please present your “sick slip” and Indiana University ID.
The IUH nurse will administer the COVID-19 test.
3. Immediately, return home and quarantine until symptoms are gone and fever has abated for more than 24 hours.
4. Test results will typically be returned in two to three days.
5. If your test is NEGATIVE: you will receive a message via IU Health Virtual Screening Clinic (the same site you initially used to get a testing appointment.)
6. If your test is POSITIVE: an IUH nurse will call you. Please answer the phone. You will receive detailed instructions from IUH on isolation and next steps, which includes downloading the Twistle app (App Store or Google Play). Through Twistle, you'll receive daily check-ins from an IUH provider to ask about your symptoms and report any concerns or worsening symptoms.
7. If one week has surpassed and you have not heard from an IUH nurse, please log into your IU Health Virtual account to contact a nurse.
Please note: If you live with someone who is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, please encourage them to isolate (i.e., in a bedroom and bathroom to themselves), wear a mask and consult with a healthcare provider. You should quarantine in your residence until you know if the individual has tested positive.
If the individual tests positive, you will be considered a close contact and be given further information about quarantine by a contact tracer. You will need to quarantine for 10 days since you were last exposed to the sick individual.
If you live with someone, or have spent time with a close contact, who is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, please encourage them to isolate (i.e., in a bedroom and bathroom to themselves), wear a mask and consult with a healthcare provider.
You should quarantine in your residence until you know if the individual has tested positive.
If the individual tests positive, you will be considered a close contact and be given further information about quarantine by a contact tracer. You will need to quarantine for 10 days since you were last exposed to the sick individual.
As soon as IU becomes aware that any member of the IU community has received a positive test (either via IU Health, self-reporting, or via information received from the local health officials), IU will initiate contact tracing.
This will involve contacting the infected person daily, and contacting all members of the IU community who have come into "close contact" with the student. Close contact is defined by IU as closer than 6 feet and/or unmasked contact.
If the community member is a student, all of their faculty will be contacted for purposes of accessing attendance records. Contact tracing will not affect everyone who is in the same class as the infected student; only those who had close contact as defined by IU. Both the infected person and those who came into close contact will be asked to quarantine.
Effective Monday, June 1, 2020, all faculty, staff, students, contractors, suppliers, vendors, and visitors are required to wear face masks in all hallways, elevators, public spaces, and common areas, and when entering all IU buildings. Face masks must also be worn in office spaces and outdoor spaces where physical distancing is difficult to maintain.
All IU students, faculty and staff were mailed two IU-branded face masks.
Forgot your face mask? No worries. IU Northwest has additional face masks available at no-charge. You can locate them at:
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Savannah Center, Office 122 (across from the bookstore)
Moraine Student Center, Office 101 (Office of Career Services)
5 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Moraine Student Center. Office 116 (IUPD Northwest)
Wearing a face mask is not required in private offices or when alone in a space.
Keeping our campus clean is our collective responsibility. While Facilities will be cleaning and sanitizing all campus building at least once per day, we ask that you also take an active role. Hand sanitizer, disinfecting spray, and paper towels will be available at the entrance of every classroom.
When students enter the classroom, they must use provided cleaning products to wipe down their assigned seat (including tablet arms), and/or table. Please sanitize your personal workstations, and shared areas or items, before and after use.
To purchase additional cleaning and sanitizing supplies, please click here.
Classroom chairs will be labelled with red dots and numbers. Those chairs should be used in order to ensure physical distancing. In some classrooms, extra chairs will be stacked in the back of the classroom.
The classrooms should be set up for physical distancing and should be left in that set-up for the duration of the semester.
Students will be assigned seats for the semester. Check Canvas, or speak with your professor regarding your assigned seat.
Throughout campus, you’ll see informational and educational signage to remind people of safety protocols, like traffic flow, forming lines, and more. Please be sure to follow all instructions … in order to keep us all safe.
A guide for returning to campus as well as an at-a-glance phased re-entry plan are now available.

Research is central to the mission of Indiana University and one of the most critical ways in which we serve the people of Indiana and beyond. COVID-19 has posed exceptional challenges to researchers, however, thanks to flexibility granted to us by Governor Eric J. Holcomb, a wide range of protective measures taken internally, and the dedication and skill of IU researchers, IU has been able to continue considerable research both on campus and off despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
