Enhancing Student Success

In what will be the first of three very special events for Indiana University Northwest on Friday, Oct. 23, the university will host its Fall 2009 Convocation beginning at 10 a.m. in the Savannah Auditorium. The theme for this year’s event is “Enhancing Student Success,” and the keynote speakers will be James C. Wimbush, Ph.D., dean of IU’s University Graduate School, David J. Malik, Ph.D., Interim Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, and Kevin Barry, M.S., Ed.S. A luncheon will follow the convocation for faculty and staff who attend the Convocation program.
This year’s Convocation will present a pedagogical program focused on developing strategies for maximizing student success through active learning techniques and technological innovations. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend this illuminating academic event.
Wimbush, a professor of business administration at IU, joined the university in 1991 and has served as dean of the University Graduate School since 2006, when he was recommended for the post by then-Vice President for Academic Affairs, and now IU President Michael A. McRobbie. Prior to that, Wimbush had served as Chair of the Department of Management for the IU Kelley School of Business. The University Graduate School oversees master’s and doctoral programs, excluding law and medicine, on all IU campuses. At the Kelley School, Wimbush taught courses in human resources and leadership, and published numerous research papers in those areas. He is an acknowledged national authority on business ethics as they relate to human resource practices. He will be speaking here on the transition from undergraduate to graduate school.
Malik is a Chancellor’s Professor of Chemistry at IUPUI and the current Director of FACET. Dr. Malik has received numerous awards including the American Chemical Society Service Award, Indiana University President's Award, and Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and FACET. He has received grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and the American Chemical Society. His research has focused most recently on issues of academic administration and the pedagogy of chemical education including placement efficacies and peer-led team learning strategies. His presentation will focus on active learning and specifically PLTL.
Barry is the Director of the Kanab Center for Teaching and Learning. He helps faculty members and TAs choose and implement pedagogical strategies and / or technology tools to enhance teaching and learning. He is also involved in the development of technology based curriculum resources and the design of teaching and learning spaces. In the summer of 2007 he received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Program Grant to spend five weeks working with the Center for Innovation and Quality in Teaching at the University of Talca, Chile. He also teaches in the Computer Applications Program at Notre Dame. His presentation addresses the issue of appropriate use of technology to enhance student learning.
