Websites saved locally on Shared Server

There are a few departments that have multiple people editing their departmental website. For example: Business & Economics, Education, Leadership and some others. Their local websites are on the server, for example: \\nw-it-fs08\Departments\Business\Websites_busnw. If they are using Dreamweaver their site definition for the local copy of their website would be defined as:

  • Must map a drive to J: (Joint Drive)
    • Original way - edu, busnw,
      • map J drive (local drive) to \\nw-it-fs08\Departments\Business\Websites_busnw\busnw\ for regular side
        • MAC in Dreamweaver = GO > connect to> smb://nw-it-fs08/Departments/Business/Websites_edu/edu/
        • in Dreamweaver, then point to the maped drive for local drive
      • within Dreamweaver Site Definition for the Secured side J:\Business\Websites_busnw\busnw\wwws\ (for the secured side)
    • New way to have joint drive - Web Services can restore deleted files, can set security access for the account.
      • map J: drive to \\nw-it-fs08.ads.iu.edu\websites\website_account_name\ for regular side
        • MAC in Dreamweaver = GO > connect to> smb://nw-it-fs08/Departments/Business/Websites_edu/edu/
        • in Dreamweaver, then point to the maped drive for local drive
      • within Dreamweaver Site Definition for the Secured side J:\website_name\wwws\
  • smb://nw-it-fs08.ads.iu.edu/Business/Websites_busnw\busnw/ (for MAC mapping)

They would save their site definitions under a folder called: Dreamweaver-backup.

  • busnw.ste (for regular side)
  • busnw secured.ste (for the secured side)

If they are using FrontPage their site definition for the local copy of their website would be defined as:

  • J:\Business\Websites_busnw\busnw\ for both regular and secured sides (because they would be copying the pages from the their Shared Server local using the SiteShare (map to Webserve desktop icons) to put their pages on the Web.

MAC Mapping Drives

Here is what is used for an address to map to the imcweb server folder on a MACintosh

  • smb://nw-it-fs08.ads.iu.edu/temp/imcweb

Mapping SiteShare on a Macintosh using person's Network-ID for login when on campus:

  • smb://webserve.iu.edu/videonw

Note: The server name such as; "nw-it-fs08" should be followed by ".ads.iu.edu", then the rest of the address can follow. Also, forward slashes "/" will be needed for a MAC to map the address. On campus, from the desktop, from the menu select "go" and connect to server using smb://webserve.iu.edu/accountname.

MAC connection to Webserve

MAC Using Dreamweaver from Home

In order to use siteshare, MACs need to connect to the IU network. VPN does not work with MACs. Siteshare mapping (using the Samba service in the background) no longer works with the latest update to OS X. From what we are told, with our current servers, the security will not allow MACs to connect with Siteshare. So to map to the drive, //webserve.iu.edu as shown on the following image:
