Option II - Graduate Program

The Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) - Option II offers the opportunity for students with bachelor's degrees in fields outside of education to become certified as secondary school teachers.

Option II prepares teachers for the multitude of challenges they encounter in today's urban classrooms.  The program ensures that entry-level teachers are exposed to current and effective models of teaching under the direction and able assistance of university faculty members.  The entry-level teacher will be guided through actual teaching and learning situations with classroom students until the intern becomes confident, competent, and effective.

Since the State of Indiana has approved Option II as a permanent alternative route to certification, traditional certification requirements do not apply.

Upon successful completion of the requirements, candidates will be recommended for certification and will receive a standard teaching license.

Option II is open to:

  • Conventional Option II graduate students (Graduate students without regular teaching/substituting positions)
  • Teaching interns with an Emergency Permit
  • Resident substitutes (Classroom substitutes admitted to the Option II Program and assigned to the same school building each day.  This includes but is not limited to, substitutes on long-term assignments.)
Students may be admitted to the program as Conventional Option II Graduate Students and later have their status changed to Teaching Intern or Resident Substitute.

Applications for Option II are accepted from August 1st - October 1st each year.
