The Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) is a collaborative teacher-preparation
program, which is sponsored by Indiana University Northwest, the School
of Education and the school districts of Gary , Hammond and East Chicago
. It is an intensive field-based program for IUN Education majors that
integrates theory, content, and experience into teacher preparation.
UTEP offers the opportunity to work closely with classroom teachers and
university professors in the final two years of pre-service preparation
for teaching through instructional teams at Professional Development Schools
(PDSs).
Field work or pedagogy and delivery are targeted for urban schools. In a reflective
relationship with UTEP staff, Teacher-Instructors (TIs) and university
personnel, undergraduates develop their teaching skills through direct
interaction with public school students.
Option I students follow the School
of Education 's (SOE) program of study.
For Admission
Consideration:
- Successful completion of 62 credit hours from the SOE's program of
study
- Have a 2.5 or better GPA and be admitted to the SOE's
Teacher Education Program.
- Apply to UTEP no sooner than 2" block and no later
than 3"' block of the SOE's Teacher Education Program
- A letter of recommendation of a School of Education faculty member,
an urban schoolteacher or principal or a positive evaluation from an
urban field experience must be submitted.
- Complete a 250-word essay explaining their interest
in urban teaching, and any qualities and skills that might contribute
to their success as an urban teacher.
- Interview with the UTEP director or recruitment specialist.
Elementary Certification
Students must complete 50 credit hours of general education requirements,
and 12 pre-professional credit hours.
Secondary Certification
Students pursuing certification in English, Math, Science, or Social
Studies must complete 51 credit hours of general education requirements,
9 of those being in pre-education courses.
Applications for Option I are accepted from February 1st
- April 1st each year.
