Mentoring

Mentorship is a most important aspect of this teacher training method. Each Option II intern is assigned a mentor who works with the intern for the duration of the school year practicum. All mentors are classroom teachers assigned to the same building as the intern, Mentors have an average of 25 years’ experience teaching in urban schools. Whenever possible, the mentor also teachers a grade level and subject similar to the intern.

A mentor assists the intern in becoming acquainted with the school, the faculty, routine procedures and policies. Substitutes are provided so that the mentor may observe the intern’s teaching techniques. Mentors are expected to conduct pre- and post observation conference with the interns. Time before and after school is also used for mentor/intern conferencing.

The premise in Option II is that a subject-area specialist, trained in effective pedagogy and aware of the diverse backgrounds and needs of urban students can become an effective teacher.
