Computing Workshop Descriptions - Word

Microsoft Office 2007: What's New in Word & PowerPoint

Intended for participants who are considering upgrading to Word or PowerPoint 2007 and want to learn more about them, and for experienced users of these applications who simply need to learn how to navigate in the new interface and take advantage of the new features. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the new Office 2007 interface for Word, PowerPoint and Outlook and learn how to use some the new features in each application. Compatibility issues and file formats will also be discussed.

Participants will:

  • Explore the new Office 2007 user interface
  • Understand the various file formats and compatibility issues
  • Apply quick styles
  • Customize themes
  • Use SmartArt graphics
  • Work with building blocks
  • Apply animation effects to SmartArt Graphics in PowerPoint slides
  • Modify WordArt text
  • Learn about new features in Outlook

Participants should already be able to:

  • Perform commands from the Office 2003 Menu bar and toolbars
  • Switch between Office applications
  • Enter and edit text
  • Save and print a document

Word Processing: Basic Skills

This workshop introduces basic word processing skills such as adding and formatting text, saving files and editing content. It is intended for participants who are new to word-processing. Although Microsoft Word is used for the hands-on exercises, the skills covered will translate well into the use of other modern word-processing applications.
Note: If you already have experience with a word-processing application, but are interested in learning about Microsoft Word please strongly consider attending our Word: The Essentials workshop instead

Participants will:

  • compose and edit documents
  • add basic text formatting
  • move and copy text
  • name and save documents
  • use the Help feature
  • check spelling and grammar
  • print documents

Participants should already be able to:

  • use the mouse
  • recognize icons
  • open and close windows
  • access drop down menus from the Menu bar

Word 2007: The Essentials

This workshop introduces some of the more commonly used commands and tools available in Microsoft Word. Intended for participants who are already comfortable with basic text editing and formatting, this workshop covers more advanced topics such as using tabs, creating lists, working with headers and footers, using styles, sorting text, and saving a Word document for the web.

Participants will:

  • use the Task Pane
  • utilize views and styles
  • use AutoText and AutoCorrect
  • align text using tabs and indents
  • sort information
  • format bulleted and numbered lists
  • create headers and footers
  • add comments and footnotes
  • apply borders and shading

Participants should already be able to:

  • perform basic actions with the keyboard and mouse
  • format text (for example, make text bold or italicized)
  • check spelling and grammar
  • change line spacing
  • insert page breaks and page numbering
  • save backup copies of documents to a diskette

Word 2007: Regaining Control with Autocorrect and Styles

Word often makes intrusive guesses about the way you want a document or list formatted, or automatically changes the spelling or capitalization of words you don’t want changed. This workshop is designed to help you understand how these automatic features work so you can keep them from making these kinds of unwanted corrections. In addition, by gaining a better understanding of these features, you will learn how to modify them to make them work for you, thereby helping you improve your overall productivity in Word. Formatting text consistently can be a tedious, error-prone process, too. Using styles for formatting will allow you to spend less time formatting your documents, and allow you to take advantage of Word’s other automated features, such as Live Preview and automatically generated tables of contents.

Participants will:

  • use and modify the AutoCorrect function
  • control AutoFormat As You Type settings
  • disable Word’s automatic features
  • create, apply and modify styles fo format a document
  • use themes and building blocks
  • share customzied styles between documents
  • automatically generate a table of contents

Participants should already be able to:

  • Launch Windows and Word
  • Use toolbars and pop-up menus
  • Highlight, edit, and format text and paragraphs

Word 2007: Collaborative Tools

Intended for anyone who is comfortable using Word and has a need to collaborate with others in writing or editing a Word document. This workshop introduces Word's collaborative writing features that can be particularly useful when working with multiple authors, but can also be used by a single author. With these features, multiple people can review a document and make changes or suggestions without actually altering the original text. Also introduces how to protect documents from undesired changes.

  • track and review changes to a document
  • compare drafts of a document
  • merge multiple copies of an edited document
  • protect a document from undesired changes

Participants should already be able to:

  • work with basic Word documents

Word: Graphic Features

Introduces Word’s graphic manipulation features. Intended for participants who are already comfortable using Word, this workshop uses Word’s drawing tools to modify graphics and clip art. Participants will also learn how to import and position graphics in Word documents, and how to create and modify tables and WordArt.
Note: The graphic skills covered in this workshop may also benefit PowerPoint users wishing to enhance their presentations’ graphics.

Participants will:

  • insert and modify ClipArt and graphics
  • use Word's drawing tools
  • create and modify text boxes
  • define and create columns
  • insert and modify WordArt and tables
  • import images into the Clip Gallery
  • find and download images from the Web

Participants should already be able to:

  • launch Windows and Word
  • navigate through a document
  • open and use toolbars
  • highlight, edit, and format text and paragraphs
  • select and move graphics
  • use keyboard shortcuts and pop-up menus

Word: Desktop Publishing

Though Word is not a robust desktop publishing application, it does have some advanced layout features which can be used to create simple newsletters and brochures. This workshop is intended for participants who are already familiar with Word and want to learn its advanced layout features. Participants will learn how to use templates and styles in creating more polished documents, and how to incorporate graphics, charts and an automated table of contents into a multi-column document.

  • change margins and tab settings
  • save and print your document

Word: Mail Merge

In this workshop, participants will explore the tools available for automating the creation of individually customized documents in Microsoft Word. Participants will create a data file using Word, and use that data file to create a merged document of a personalized workshop certificate. The second merged document created will involve transferring a data document from Word to Excel, modifying the data, and generating a form letter for a mass mailing. Participants will then create a third merged form letter that contains conditional merge fields, so two variations of the letter are created at once. The data set for this third merge will be a query from an Access database.

Participants will:

  • create a merge data file in Microsoft Word
  • transfer a Word data file to Excel, and modify it
  • use Microsoft Access as a merge data source
  • populate a document with merge fields
  • perform a mail merge
  • create and execute conditional merges

Participants should already be able to:

  • Create and save documents using Word
  • Format text
  • Sort information
  • Use the Task Pane

Word: Publishing Research & Longer Documents

Intended for experienced users of Word who want to create long documents such as research papers, team project reports, books, and graduate theses or dissertations. This workshop explores the best method for structuring long documents in Word and demonstrates how to reliably assemble long documents from multiple source files. It highlights Word's advanced publishing features and automated functions, so participants will also learn how to create lists of figures and captions, a table of contents and a document index.
