Computing Workshop Descriptions - Illustrator

Illustrator: The Basics

Adobe Illustrator is most commonly used to create logos, complex shapes, text effects, and technical diagrams to be used in both print and web publishing. Its vector drawing capabilities make it ideal for creating the smooth curves, bright colors, and clean transitions commonly found in these types of art. This introductory workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning how to use an array of Illustrator’s drawing tools to draw complex, eye-catching illustrations quickly and intelligently.

Participants will:

  • gain familiarity with Illustrator's interface
  • draw, edit, and manipulate art elements
  • work with shape tools to draw rectangles, ovals, stars, and more
  • learn how Illustrator represents the math behind lines and curves
  • create complex shapes by combining and transforming simple shapes
  • bend text around a path

Participants should already be able to:

  • use a mouse
  • use Windows command menus
  • save and organize files

Illustrator: Complex Illustrations

Designed for users who have some experience with Illustrator’s basic features, this workshop teaches participants how to create stylized, real-world objects by utilizing Illustrator's advanced vector drawing capabilities. Participants will learn how to integrate Illustrator’s sophisticated tool set to create complex illustrations which incorporate altered shapes and gradients, freehand and predefined shapes, and compound paths. Methods for creating the illusion of perspective in an illustration will also be introduced.

Participants will:

  • Alter basic shapes
  • modify predefined gradients
  • create the illusion of perspective in an illustration
  • import external artwork
  • use the Scale Tool
  • create and modify Path Blends
  • create Compound Paths and Clipping Masks
  • draw freehand and create shapes with the Pen Tool
  • create Text Effects

Participants should already be able to:

  • Work with Illustrator's Toolbox and palettes
  • Work with shape tools to draw rectangles and ovals
  • Combine simple shapes
  • Work with a gradient
  • Import external artwork
