Computing Workshop Descriptions - Flash

Flash: The Basics

This workshop is not on the schedule for Spring 2008. Please contact the Training Coordinator to purchase self-study materials.

This introductory workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning how to create basic drawings and animations in Flash. The workshop also provides extensive coverage of key multimedia concepts, such as the timeline, symbols, file architecture and asset management, and the role of scripting in the creation of interactive projects.

Currently there are no scheduled offerings of this workshop.

Participants will:

  • gain familiarity with the flash interface
  • create graphic content
  • animate graphics, applying tweens, acceleration, motion paths, and nested animations
  • work with the flash library
  • create and deploy movie clip symbols and instances
  • add sound to flash movies

Participants should already be able to:

  • work with graphic program interfaces, including the toolbox, palettes/panels, and layers
  • understand the difference between vector and bitmap graphics
  • draw in vector graphics applications, including experience with the pen tool

Flash: Interactivity Basics

This workshop is not on the schedule for Spring 2008. Please contact the Training Coordinator to purchase self-study materials.

Intended for experienced Flash designers ready to learn the basics of programming ActionScript, Flash's native scripting language. This workshop covers the basics of ActionScript and provides an overview of using it to create interactive, non-linear Flash movies. Topics covered include how to architect Flash movies for optimal flexibility and maintainability, deploying movie clip and button symbols, and displaying text messages dynamically, based on user activity.

Participants will:

  • architect movies using nested timelines
  • create and edit button symbols
  • understand and specify events
  • write ActionScripts in the Actions panel
  • populate text fields dynamically
  • control hierarchically organized timelines using ActionScript
  • publish Flash movies (to HTML)

Participants should already be able to:

  • draw graphics using Flash's vector drawing tools
  • assign content to layers in the timeline
  • use keyframes to control changes to objects on the stage
  • understand when and how to create graphic, button, and movie clip symbols
