About SI Mission StatementSupplemental Instruction (SI) promotes an active learning environment for students through peer-led study sessions. Through SI, students gain the skills necessary for future academic success. What is SI?Supplemental Instruction is an opportunity for you to take an active role in your learning experience. It is offered for historically difficult courses at IU Northwest and are facilitated by SI leaders, students who have successfully completed the course and have been recommended by their professor. These sessions provide an interactive learning environment organized for students enrolled in SI designated courses. All students in the course who want to improve their understanding of course material are welcome to attend SI sessions. These sessions are provided free of charge to all students. Attendance at sessions is voluntary. For you the student, it is a chance to:
Who goes to SI Sessions? Students who want to do their best. The sessions are open to anyone enrolled in the selected course. Most students who attend, finish with a half or full letter grade higher than those who do not attend SI sessions. How does SI work?Interested students can attend any or all of the scheduled SI sessions. SI is a great way to study effectively and keep up with course material throughout the semester. During SI sessions, the SI Leader helps students acquire new study skills and helps them to meet the expectations of the professor by coordinating group discussions about the class lecture and by doing various other activities that lead to a better understanding of course material.
