A Message from Joseph Pellicciotti, August 5, 2003
Dear Colleagues, Students, and Other Friends of SPEA: Recently, the IU Northwest Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs asked me to become an Associate Vice Chancellor on a full-time basis. As a result, I stepped down as the division director to assume the new responsibilities. Dr. Richard Hug has assumed the position of interim division director. My decision was a very difficult one. As those of you who have had contact with SPEA know, the SPEA faculty is truly remarkable. It is a teaching faculty devoted to student success. In addition, the faculty has a remarkable record of high quality research, and members of the faculty also are actively involved in public service to the people of northwest Indiana. In addition, SPEA is fortunate to have a terrific staff. They care so much about our students and “go the extra mile” to help them succeed. The division would not be the great place it is without the staff’s work. What a wonderful group of people! I will keep my rank and tenure in SPEA and hope to continue to teach a course when possible. Even though I am taking on another campus position, I do not want to leave SPEA totall. I look back at my time as director with satisfaction. SPEA’s enrollment has grown greatly over the period. Our overall student enrollment has grown by approximately 85% since the Fall Semester, 1990. In fact, undergraduate enrollment has increased approximately 100%. There are now well over 500 students in SPEA. For much of the period and until recent semesters, SPEA’s enrollment increased while the overall campus enrollment declined. The number of SPEA full-time faculty has grown considerably over the period, as well, and we have added several important programs for our students, including the Bachelor of Science in Health Services Management, undergraduate Certificate in Public Safety, and graduate certificate programs in Nonprofit Management and Environmental Affairs. We successfully completed two re-accreditation reviews by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), our accrediting body. In addition, we have been selected to be included in and have actively participated in the planning for a new building – a building that will offer the faculty and our students a terrific facility for teaching and learning. The efforts of members of the faculty in the community have been so exceptional that we also are well known as leaders in the delivery of service to the public and nonprofit sectors. Again, SPEA has a great faculty and staff! I will miss my work as director. However, the director’s position is in excellent hands. Dr. Hug is a terrific person, and the division will continue to grow and prosper under his leadership. I certainly am excited for SPEA. I see nothing but a greater SPEA under Dr. Hug’s direction. We are very fortunate. For me, it has been an honor to be able to serve as director for the past 14 years. Thank you.
