SPEA's Certificate in Nonprofit Management
Academic Features:
The graduate-level certificate program is a 5-course, 15 credit
hour program of the IU Northwest Division of Public & Environmental Affairs
and Political Science. The program is a less extensive course of
study at the graduate level. It provides a focused program of study
in nonprofit management.
Certificate requirements are as follows:
- V525 Management in the Nonprofit Sector
- V526 Financial Management for Nonprofit Organizations
- V522 Human Resource Management in Nonprofit Organizations
Two additional SPEA graduate public affairs courses are also required.
Program Special Features:
The program is flexible enough to adapt to the needs of precareer
or in-service persons and to individuals with varying degrees of experience
in nonprofit management. Credit earned in the certificate program
is applicable to the Master of Public Affairs degree program, upon admission
to that degree program. Students may also participate in an internship
through the division's Public and Nonprofit Service Internship Program.
The division is part of the Indiana University system School of Public
& Environmental Affairs (SPEA). SPEA is a professional school
operating programs on six Indiana University campuses. SPEA is the
largest school of public affairs in the country.

Does the program meet the needs of part-time students? Yes,
the program and scheduling of courses is designed to meet the needs
of part-time as well as full-time students. All required courses
are offered in the evenings or on weekends, to accommodate the needs
of in-service students. Will I have the opportunity to relate
classroom instruction to real-world problems? Absolutely, the
faculty has real-world professional experience, and that experience
is recognized in the quality of classroom instruction. Also, the
internships offered by the division are outstanding, with opportunities
available for graduate-level internships in a variety of areas in public
affairs. I am not ready yet for a graduate degree program, but
I may decide to pursue the Master of Public Affairs degree program in
the future. Will the courses I take in the certificate program
apply toward the M.P.A.? If you choose to apply for and are admitted
to the M.P.A. program, all courses and credit earned in the certificate
program are automatically applied toward the M.P.A. degree program.
Career Options:
Students pursuing a nonprofit management certificate gain an understanding
of how to work in and with nonprofit organizations. The faculty is
committed to helping students develop productive and rewarding careers.

The division holds two career days each year, both of which are excellent
opportunities to learn about careers in the public and nonprofit service.
The outstanding internship program and the network of SPEA alumni also
contribute to the career development of students.
Academic Societies:
The division maintains chapters of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national
criminal justice honor society, and Pi Alpha Alpha, the national honorary
society for schools of public affairs and administration.
