A Message From The Dean

In the Environmental Sciences and in Public Affairs...
Preparing Tomorrow's Leaders, Solving Complex Problems, Enriching Society

The issues that define quality of life for the citizens of Indiana, the nation, and the world are the mainstay of the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Five characteristics distinguish the School as a leader in the disciplines of environmental science and public affairs.

First, we are a university's response to society. Our founding mandate was "to deal effectively and dispassionately with the myriad of needs and problems of modern society."

Second, we are, by our very nature, an interdisciplinary school. Scientists, lawyers, economists, and political scientists work side-by-side, and their teaching and research are meaningful not just to other scholars but also to policy makers and citizens.

Third, because issues of policy transcend national boundaries and cultures, we advance globalization by forming new vital partnerships and helping to build institutions around the globe.

Fourth, we do what we do very well. We are consistently in the top tier of schools of public affairs in national rankings.

Last, our work makes a difference in the quality of life in today's society. United States Senator Evan Bayh says of the School: "SPEA has succeeded because its focus is worldwide and it meets the relevant needs of government at all levels. Your graduates have enriched our state beyond measure."

As we celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2002, we remain committed to the superb teaching, the research, and the creative solutions that the public, private and nonprofit sectors, and our citizens have come to expect from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
