Gary and Joe's Excellent Bicycle Adventure

Day 9 - Las Vegas, New Mexico

Gary's Journal - Day 9

Hello Everyone,

We arrived today in Las Vegas, NM.  It was a trying day.  I know everyone thinks I (we) are always complaining, but that is what a journal is about.  Telling it like it is.  We left late again because we were up late doing admin work.  We are still having trouble with our mobile phone.  The only emails we have sent were by telephone in our motel room.  We are still hoping when we get further east, it will get better.  Albuquerque is down in a valley so we had to climb out this morning.  It was a hell of a climb.  I didn't think we would make the day if it didn't level out.  It finally did for awhile.  We had another first today.  We had gone about thirty miles when the road we were following turned from a paved road to a dirt road.  You can not ride street bikes on dirt roads.

Oh my, that's gooooooood!

We had to call for the van and drive around this area until we got to a paved road again.  There were no towns near, so we had to eat from the cooler in the van.  You need more than just snacks when you are climbing mountains but it had to do.  We went on.  We had more than thirty five miles to Las Vegas and it was all up hill and very windy, in our face.  We made it and built character as well.(see attached) We had another first.  When we reached Las Vegas, we rewarded ourselves with a stop at the ice cream shop.(see attached)  The scenery alone the way was beautiful but we are looking for a change.  Something with no mountains.  We are very close to Texas.  We should be there after tomorrow.  We will probably have some level ground for awhile, we hope.  Will close for now.  We will not have to be told to go to bed.   Wish us well.
