Gary and Joe's Excellent Bicycle Adventure

Day 11 - Amarillo, Texas

Gary's Journal - Day 11

Hello Everyone,

The day started like a day in hell! It was decided (by me) that we would go on. The plan was for Joe to do most of the riding and I would ride when I could.  We started off.  We both did ten miles and then I got in the van.  Joe rode on.  He did ten and then I joined him again.  I had no strength or energy.  I was barely getting up the easy hills.  We continued until about 75 miles.  The weather was turning bad and we decided to head for the hotel early and rest.  I was feeling a little better.  We arrived and set up.  The goal was to be in Oklahoma by the afternoon.  Joe decided to head for the state line by himself and Dion could bring him back.  It is very important to stay on schedule because on Joe's time at the mill.  He rode to the state line but could not reach it because the road ended.  He saw it but couldn't cross it.  We will start there tomorrow.  I was able to get something on my stomach and as of this writing, I feel much better.  Tomorrow will be a test.  I hope I am back.  Enough complaining.  We saw the biggest cross in the world.  It was huge (see attached).  The road was level mostly and we made good time.  There are not too many mountains in the panhandle of Texas.  I guess this is called the high plains.  The scenery is beautiful and the thing we notice is that we see water now, which we have not seen, and everything is green.  Beautiful country.  As of this writing I feel great.  Ready to ride.  Will close for now.  Would love to be home, but must continue as long as we can.  We are trying very hard to reach the halfway mark without killing ourselves.  All is well.
