Admission Requirements

Professional social work education requires students at the Master's level to undertake a rigorous program of classroom and field study. Indiana University School of Social Work seeks to admit the individual who has demonstrated competency though previous academic work, professional achievements and volunteer commitments. A strong commitment to social justice and service to others should also be evident in the application. The school also seeks to provide an ethnically diversified student body.

Enrollment in the MSW program requires official admission to the Indiana University School of Social Work. A limited number of students are admitted each year. The following items are the minimum requirements for consideration for admission:

  1. An earned Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Evidence of course work in liberal arts.
  3. Successful completion of a minimum of six courses in social or behavioral sciences, as defined in the application packet.
  4. Successful completion of a course in statistics.
  5. An earned cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, taken from the last 60 credit hours in your bachelor's degree.
  6. Submission of the completed application packet within the established time period.

Because the application process is self-managed, applicants must provide, in one correspondence, all required materials noted in the application packet. Consideration will not be given if applications are received with incomplete materials. Depending on the volume of applications, the Admissions Committee strives to notify applicants for the Northwest program of their decisions by mid April. Applicants not admitted then will be held for periodic consideration as replacements for persons declining acceptance or withdrawing before the beginning of the program. Admission is competitive, and total enrollment is determined by the instructional resources of the school.
