YOUNG SCIENTISTS COMPETE AT CALUMET REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR

 

[IUN, Gar= y, IN] The 51st Cal= umet Regional Science Fair and Associated Art Exhibit was held on Saturday, March 10, 2007 at Indiana University Northwest (3400 Broadway) Gary, Indiana. The Fair took place in the Savannah Center.

 

A total of 150 student scientists participated in the = Fair. They represent twenty-five schools in Lake County, Indiana= . The Fair is divided into three divisions or grade levels that are Elementary, Junior, and Senior. Each division is then subdivided into thirteen categori= es, which are Social and Behavior Science, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Com= puter Science, Engineering, Earth and Space Science, Environmental Science, Math, Medicine and Health Science, Microbiology, Physics, Team, and Zoology.

 

The two top achievers in the Senior Division, and their sponsors, receive a trip to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair. This year the International Science Fair will be held in = Albuquerque, New Mexico in May. The next three scientists receive a trip to the Indiana State Science Fair in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the state scien= ce fair the participants compete for a trip to the International Science Fair = as well as  other awards.

 

The top three achievers in the Junior Division receive= a trip to compete at the Indiana State Science Fair in = Indianapolis. There is no junior divisi= on at the International Fair so the State Fair is their final competition.

 

The Elementary Division recognizes its top performers,= but they do not advance into any more competition after the Calumet Regional Fa= ir.

 

 Nhila Jagedeeesan, (Lake Central High School<= /st1:PlaceType>, St. John, Indiana – Marge Thompson, sponsor), earned top honors in the Senior Division.= Her project is titled “The Anti-Microbial Properties of the Isolate of Curcuma longa and its Growth Impediment Effects on Escerichia Coli.” = More simply explained by Nhila is that her project explores the medicinal proper= ties of the spice Tumeric. Nhila has exhibited at two previous International Sci= ence Fairs. Nhila started exhibiting at science fairs while still in elementary school.

 

Brian Cherbak, (Hanover Central High School, Cedar= Lake, Indiana – Travis Lech= ien, sponsor) earned the second place in the Senior Division. Brian’s proj= ect is titled “The Use of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) in Process Control”. In layman’s terms Brian is working with robotics. Bri= an has exhibited at one previous International Science Fair.

 

The third, fourth, and fifth places all attend Campagna Academy Charter School in Schererville, Indiana. All of these young scientists= have Kathryn Hedges as a sponsor. The young scientists are Aisha Payne, Victoria Torres, and Sarah Faught and their projects are titled “Low Light Vis= ion in Dark Adaptive Hypo Pigmented and Wild Type Zebra Fish”, “Col= ored Light Preference of Artemia Salina”, and “The Effect of Cigaret= tes on Growth and Development.”

 

In the Junior Division the top three places all attend= St. Mary’s Catholic Community School, Crown Point, Indiana and have Patricia Cuddington as their sponsor. First place was earned by Katelin Krenvke, second place was earned by Paul Kendell, and third place was earned by Katrina Zdanowcz.

 

In the Elementary Division first place was awarded to = Eve Mendoza (Protsman Elementary School, Dyer, Indiana – Cindy = Walsh, sponsor) and second place was awarded to Chandler Cowser (Watson Elementary= , Schererville, Indiana – Donna Spivak, Sponsor.)

 

According to fair officials the participation number of young scientists is greater than last year’s fair. The attendance by = the public is also increasing. The judges commented on the quality of the proje= cts and the depth of the research. Science fairs are a great way to assist in reaching ISTEP goals in science. Next year’s Calumet Regional Science Fair and Associated Art Exhibit is scheduled for March 8, 9, & 10, 2008= at Indiana University Northwest.
