The Department of Psychology offers four degree options:
- A Major in Psychology leading to a
Bachelors of Arts degree.
- A Major in Psychology leading to a Bachelors of Science
degree.
- A Minor in Psychology in support of a Bachelors degree.
- An Associate of Arts with a Concentration in Psychology.
Major in Psychology - B.A. Degree
Requirements
Majors complete 30 credit hours including the following courses in
psychology.
- P101 and P102 are prerequisites for all courses.
- P211 and K300 are prerequisites for all 400-level laboratory
courses.
- Area A. A minimum of two of the following: P325, P326, P327, P329,
P335, P390 (depending upon topic), P407, P417.
- Area B. A minimum of two of the following: P316, P319, P320, P324,
P336, P390 (depending upon topic), P419, P425, P430.
- Advanced laboratory. One from the following: P421, P424, P429, P435,
P436.
- Elective (one course selected from any 300 or 400 level course in
Psychology)
- Psychology P421 or P424 or P429 or P435 or P436 satisfies the
capstone requirement.
Students must also complete the general requirements of the Division of
Arts and Sciences for the B.A. degree.
Recommended In addition to meeting departmental and general
requirements, the department suggests that psychology majors take
supporting courses in mathematics and the natural sciences. We recommend
the following courses for all majors: Biology L101 and two advanced
courses. It is also important to obtain a broadly based education in the
humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Students should not
concentrate all their electives in psychology or any other single subject
area. Courses such as logic, philosophy, sociology, and computer science
are especially appropriate. Prospective psychology students and/or majors
are invited to discuss their interests with any member of the psychology
faculty.
Major in Psychology - B.S. Degree
Requirements
Majors complete 36 credit hours including the following courses in
psychology.
- P101 and P102 are prerequisites for all courses.
- P211 and K300 are prerequisites for all 400-level laboratory
courses.
- Area A. A minimum of three of the following: P325, P326, P327, P329,
P335, P390 (depending upon topic), P407, P417.
- Area B. A minimum of two of the following: P316, P319, P320, P324,
P336, P390 (depending upon topic), P419, P425, P430.
- Advanced laboratory. One from the following: P421, P424, P429, P435,
P436.
- Elective (two courses selected from any 300 or 400 level course in
Psychology)
- Psychology P421 or P424 or P429 or P435 or P436 satisfies the
capstone requirement.
- Allied Sciences. Biology L101, L102, Chemistry C105, C106, C125,
C126 plus 28 credit hours listed under the category IIIA at the 200
level or above.
Students must also complete the general requirements of the Division of
Arts and Sciences for the B.S. degree.
In addition, prospective psychology students and/or majors are invited
to discuss their interests with any member of the psychology faculty.
Minor in Psychology
Requirements
Students who elect to minor in psychology must complete the following:
- P101, P102,
- any three additional courses in psychology for which the student has
the prerequisites.
Associate of Arts - Concentration in Psychology
Requirements
- P101, P102, P211
- one course from Area A (P325, P326, P327, P329, P335); and
- one course from Area B (P316, P319, P320, P324). Students must also
complete the general requirements of the Division of Arts and Sciences.
