Anthrax Information

Recent events have raised public concern about the risks posed by Anthrax threats. The public safety agencies of Northwest Indiana have plans to deal with these threats quickly and efficiently.  Contact the University Police Department at 219-980-6501 to report any campus-related suspicious packages, letters, or threats.  The following guidelines are offered to you in the event you receive suspicious materials.

Mail Screening Checklist

Staff responsible for incoming mail should maintain an awareness of the possibility of anthrax threat letters. This checklist outlines common features of anthrax threat letters.

  • No return address
  • Excessive postage
  • Hand written or poorly typed addresses
  • Misspelling of common words
  • Restrictive markings such as "Confidential", "Personal", etc.
  • Excessive weight and/or a feel of a powdery substance

If suspicious package comes to your office, call the University Police immediately.
