Emergency Procedures Handbook - Chemical Odor / Burning Odor

Chemical or Gas Odor

  1. If an unusual chemical or gas odor is present, call the IUN Police Department at 980-6501, and give:
    • Building
    • Floor
    • Room number
    • Type/description of the odor
  2. If a hazardous material release or gas leak is discovered, turn to that section of this handbook immediately and follow those instructions.
  3. If the source of the odor is not obvious, do not attempt to remedy the situation. Wait for those responding to your call to identify the source and recommend steps to return the area to its normal condition.

Burning Odor

  1. If an unusual burning odor is present, but no smoke is visible, call the IUN Police Department at 980-6501 and give:
    • Building
    • Floor
    • Room number
    • Type/description of the odor
  2. If a fire is discovered, immediately turn to the fire section of this handbook and follow those instructions.
  3. If the source of the burning odor is not obvious, do not attempt to remedy the situation. Those responding to your call will try to identify the source and make recommendations to return the area to its normal condition.
