- Upon discovering a fire, explosion or smoke in the building, activate
the fire alarm system. The nearest fire alarm is located at:

- After sounding the alarm, call the IU Northwest University Police
Department at 980-6501 or 9911 (on campus) and give:
- Building name
- Floor
- Room number
- Type of incident
- When the fire alarm sounds, complete evacuation is required.
Walk, do not run, to the nearest stairway exit and proceed to ground
level. Close doors and windows as you leave. The alarm may not sound
continuously. If the alarm stops, continue the evacuation and warn others
who may attempt to enter the building after the alarm stops.
- DO NOT USE ELEVATORS DURING A FIRE EMERGENCY.
- Leave the building and move away from it, leaving walks and drives
open for arriving firefighters. Do not return to the building until
directed to do so by the Police or Fire Department.
- Someone familiar with the situation and who knows the area involved
should meet the Fire Department.
- Everyone must follow the orders of the Police and Fire Department
when they arrive.
- Notify firefighters on the scene if you suspect someone may be trapped
inside the building
FIRE EXTINGUISHER USE
- After sounding the alarm, if you are trained, attempt
to contain a small fire (wastebasket size) by utilizing available fire
extinguishers.
- Remember the PASS-word
- PULL the pin: This unlocks the operating lever.
- AIM low: Point the extinguisher nozzle (or hose)
at the base of the fire.
- SQUEEZE the handle: This discharges the extinguishing
agent.
- SWEEP from side to side: Moving carefully toward
the fire, keep the extinguisher aimed at the base of the fire. Sweep
back and forth until the flames are out. Watch the fire area. If
the fire re-ignites, repeat the process.
