- Why are telephone authorization codes necessary?
A recent University Information
Technology Services (UITS) security policy requires authorization
code processing at each regional IU campus. Telephone
authorization codes help control chargeable calling.
- What telephone services require authorization
codes?
Rate sensitive services such as long distance, international, local
toll, direct assistance (e.g.,1411), and operator services require
authorization codes. Flat rate services such as local, toll-free,
campus (4 digit), emergency, and SUVON do
not require telephone authorization codes.
- What is the relationship between dialing "A9" first,
dialing "A8" first, and telephone authorization
codes?
"A9" employs automatic route selection (ARS). ARS nominates one path from a pool of Ameritech, AT&T
long distance, McLeod long distance, and SUVON circuits. Each path
selected reflects least cost and
availability
"A8" ensures a SUVON network connection. However, if IUN=s 11 SUVON circuits are busy, out of service, or the dialed number is
not part of the SUVON network, University business sustains a delay
because the telephone user must redial with a "A9" or wait
A telephone authorization code will be needed if the telephone
user dials "A9" first, the dialed number is SUVON
capable, the 11 SUVON circuits are busy or out of service, and ARS
nominates McLeod or AT&T long distance
- How do I place a personal call with a telephone
authorization code?
Due to the tax-exempt status of Indiana University, personal calls cannot
be charged to University facilities. To
place a personal call, Indiana University suggests forwarding bill
information to a personal calling card, home telephone number, or called
telephone number. (http://www.indiana.edu/~uits/telecom/phone/facstaff/longdist.htm)
- Who should I contact for IUN telephone authorization
code changes?
The IUN help desk (981-4357, ext.4357) documents and dispatches requests
for computer, telephone, data, and physical plant assistance. Help
desk authorization code documentation assures accuracy, security,
and prompt attention.
- When should I enter my IUN telephone authorization
code?
After dialing a rate sensitive service B long distance, international,
local toll, and direct assistance (e.g., 1411) B the IUN telephone
system delivers a second
dial tone. During the second
dial tone, the telephone user enters their confidential seven-digit
code. Failing to enter an authorized seven digit
code during the second dial tone triggers a disconnect.
- Will my IUN telephone authorization code work
at other IU campuses?
No. Each IU campus maintains
an independent database. Portability
may be available in the future
- How do I use authorization codes with a fax
or modem?
Add the extra seven digits
to the dialed number through the fax dial pad or modem program; e.g.,
long distance 9121299988881234567 (1234567= seven digit code). If
dialing an international fax or modem, place a "#" between
the dialed number and the authorization code; e.g., international 9001131204852133#1234567
(1234567=seven digit code). The "#" supports
long international numbers (10-23 digits), authorization codes, and
fax timing parameters. Call the help desk (ext. 4357) if dialing
problems occur.
- Will my telephone authorization code work
on campus telephones outside my office?
Yes
- Are telephone authorization codes assigned
to extensions or individuals?
Telephone authorization codes are assigned
to individuals. IUN account managers
determine staff assignments and department policy -- e.g., part-time and temporary staff requirements. Telephone authorization codes may not be shared.
