Indiana University Northwest

Department of Performing Arts

Welcome

Thank you for visiting the only public theatre degree program in Northwest Indiana. We pride ourselves in the quality of education we can provide for our students. Our program emphasizes the importance of all areas of professional theatre by using current information in our classes, individualized training, and in trying to create a professional working environment on stage. Our award winning faculty brings a combined 40 years of professional and academic experience to their classes. IU Northwest is only forty minutes from Chicago and our affiliation with many theatres in the area has made for an easy transition between the academic and the professional world for many of our students.

Performing arts provides academic curricula in music, theatre, and dance for students who seek to develop careers in these areas. Extensive performance programs provide practical experiences that complement classroom study.

So, come on in and have a look around.

November 12-14, 2010 Angel Street

Angel Street tells the demoniac story of the Manninghams of Angel Street.  Under the guise of kindliness, handsome Mr. Manningham is torturing his wife into insanity.  He accuses her of petty aberrations that he has arranged himself; and since her mother died of insanity, she is more than half convinced that she too, is going out of her mind.  While her diabolical husband is out of the house, a benign police inspector visits her and ultimately proves to her that her husband is a maniacal criminal that is preparing to dispose of her.  This is an exciting and melodramatic game you don’t want to miss.

February 20, 2011:  Music Concert Savannah Auditorium

Peter Aglinskas, producer, composer, conductor and solo guitarist will perform original music from his recent CD’s, including soul music from Chicago and the Region, as well as solo guitar arrangements of Latin Jazz.  Peter Aglinskas has a wide repertoire of musical credits including recordings with international symphonies, theatre and film scores, as well as major original compositions and commissions.

April 2-3, 2011:  The Princess and the Pea

The story tells of a prince who wants to marry a princess, but is having difficulty finding a suitable partner. Something is always wrong with those he meets, and he cannot be certain they are real princesses. One stormy night a young woman drenched with rain seeks shelter in the prince's castle. She claims to be a princess, so the prince's mother decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a pea in the bed she is offered for the night, covered by layers of mattresses and featherbeds. In the morning the guest tells her hosts that she endured a sleepless night, kept awake by something hard in the bed. The prince rejoices. Only a real princess would have the sensitivity to feel a pea through such a quantity of bedding. The two are married, and the pea is placed in the Royal Museum.
