What Tutoring Is & Isn't

Tutoring is a strategy for strengthening a learner’s study stills and ability to learn. Consciously tailored to the learning style and intellectual background of the individual, tutoring builds confidence, teaches new strategies for coping with course content, and helps refine a student’s thinking processes.

Although there is some overlap, tutoring is not the same process as teaching. Most teaching is focused on the course matter, while tutoring is focused on the learner. Tutoring isn’t a substitute for doing homework or going to class.

Tutoring is the process of helping a learner acquire the tools needed to be successful with academic assignments.

If this is the kind of assistance you’ve been looking for, you’ve found it. For more information about the Occupational Development Program, contact the Program Coordinator, at (219) 980-6832 in Hawthorn Hall 244.
