Tutor Training

Students who have been recommended by a faculty member and approved by the referring department may enroll in ODP training. This training includes workshops, personalized supervision, Oncourse training and a user-friendly textbook with the most effective tutoring techniques.

In addition to knowledge of subject matter, tutors need an in-depth preparation in the process of tutoring itself. This includes understanding how to set up and conduct each session and what interpersonal and communication patterns strengthen a learner’s confidence and study skills. The tutor training course teaches these through a combination of practical activities and assignments requiring thoughtful reflection.

A number of valuable skills and relevant issues are covered in the training:

• goals and ethics of tutoring relationships
• procedural differences between tutoring and teaching
• tutoring needs assessment and goal-setting
• learning styles and other learner characteristics
• teaching effective study skills
• encouraging active learning
• maximizing successful tutoring sessions
• active listening and useful feedback
• nonverbal communication
• referral skills: when the problem is not the subject matter
