Meeting Location: Indiana Universuty Northwest

Updates on Local GIS Projects.
The city of Gary is in the process of finalizing a contract with the POLIS Center at IUPUI. Representatives of the POLIS Center are expected on site to interview personnel in Gary City Departments to determine their GIS needs. Spike Peller and Savella Rasberry are working with Jim Sparks of the Polis Center and are expecteed to complete the contract within days. A final report on the project is expected in about five months.

Alan Ross is to follow-up with Robinson Engineering regarding metadata that was created for their mapping project. If no metadata has been created, it was suggested that Ed Rudd contact Cele Morris for metadata creation under our EPA grant.

Bob Strimbu reports that the data created by Robinson Engineering is currently being used for internal projects in departments such as Community Planning and Environmental Affairs. The data is being maintained and updated by the City at this time. No electronic data dissemination policy has been created to date. Hard copy maps are being distributed.

US EPA is currently looking at the national issue of Institutional Control. This item concerns restriction on use of properties and has ties to Brownfields.

Training - The Taming Tiger 2000 workshop held on December 6, 2001 at Valparaiso University and led by Lauren Rhein of NIRPC and J. Kilpinen of Valpo U was a success. Becky will ask Jon Kilpinen to put information distributed to the attendees online. Future workshops will be discussed at our next meeting. Future ArcView trainings sessions are questionable at this time.

Indiana GIS Initiative
The Indiana GIS 2002 Conference will be held February 28 - March 1 at the Sheraton, Indianapolis Hotel and Suites. Those planning on reserving a room for the conference are encouraged to take advantage of the special rates at the conference site, Sheraton, Keystone at the Crossing. Becky will submit a press release to a local paper prior to the conference for local publicity. A poster will also be displayed at the conference to help identify any attendees from Northwest Indiana of whom we might be unaware.

INGISI has requested that the NWI GIS Forum present their Taming Tiger 2000 workshop at the Indiana GIS 2002 Conference. Becky McKinley and Lauren Rhine will present the workshop on Thursday, February 28.

EPA Grant - IDEM has updated their GIS coverages currently residing on IGS's Lake Rim Web site. Fully compliant metadata has also been created for these files. The Indiana Geological Survey will post this new data and metadata in the near future on the Lake Rim site.

Cele has completed metadata for seven datasets submitted by Lauren Rhine of NIRPC. The metadata has been returned to Lauren for editing and will be submitted to the Indiana Geographic Catalog upon final approval.

Additional metadata sets from our membership are sparse. Exploration for more regional GIS datasets will continue.

Kevin mentioned that other data residing on the Lake Rim site is relatively old and it might not be advantageous to create metadata for this data.

Additional items that can be addressed for the grant include investigating other Lake Rim files that might be updated. A shift towards creating new data for the site might make sense if it fits into the description for our grant. Refining the goals of our grand could be explored.

Other Items: A survey to our membership in the near future to ascertain who is using ArcGIS 8 might be beneficial for future training sessions. The cost of training manual for Arc 8 seems to be decreasing.

Next Meeting: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 14, 2002 - IU Northwest - 2nd Floor.
