Women's and Gender Studies
Overview
Welcome to the Women’s and Gender Studies program at Indiana University Northwest. This interdisciplinary field focuses on analyzing gender, and on intersectional social constructions such as race, class, and sexuality within and across cultures. The field of Women’s and Gender Studies examines and explores shifting social patterns, cultural formations, and popular media through a gendered lens. WGS’s interdisciplinarity allows for a wide range of perspectives from various fields (such as: literature, philosophy, psychology, sociology, biology, anthropology, history, disability studies, African-American studies, Chicano/a studies, Asian studies etc.) and provides a more representative sampling of global voices. WGS classes are grounded in feminist ideology, and are often shaped by the students’ experiences – they are lively and engaged spaces in which to build a sense of personal and political power. Unique among the disciplines, Women’s and Gender Studies equips students with the analytical tools to critically examine, and evaluate their environments as well as build a richer understanding of global issues and relationships.
