Special Features
Writing
Basic Writing Courses:
- For students who need an individualized writing course, we offer developmental composition (W031 Pre-composition). Students are placed into W031 through the IUN Placement Procedure.
- Added this year is the Stretch Program where students are placed into two writing classes (W130 Principals of Composition/W131 Elementary Composition I) which span two semesters with the same instructor and student group.
- W131, the required first year writing course, is offered to students who place into it.
Each year the Allen C. Austin Award is presented to the best English student(s). This prestigious monetary award is accompanied by a separate hand-picked gift from the Department. In addition to the Austin Award, the Department also sponsors an essay contest each semester (the George N. Thoma Essay Contest), which awards monetary prizes to the best essays written by freshman composition (W131) students.
Writing Internships:
Students may want to take advantage of the opportunity for hands-on experience as they develop their writing skills on the job through Internship programs arranged by Dr. Richard Hull, Associate Professor of English.
