Unit Name: Mathematics Assessment Summary Fall 2010-Spring 2011
What are the student learning outcomes in your unit? |
a) Use mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, and tables to draw inferences. |
Which outcome did you assess this academic year? |
b) and c) |
How did you assess their skills before, during and/or at the end of the semester/ academic year? |
We have common mid-term and common final exams in M118 and M100 general education courses. As needed, we look at students’ achievements. Math faculty group selects specific problems from these exams that address the three outcomes a)-c). The faculty group will develop a rubric that is based on three outcomes, randomly select a group of students that received a grade of C or better in a course, and analyze work of these students as excellent, satisfactory, or needs improvement. If less than 75% of students score satisfactory on a particular outcome, we will review and revise where necessary the content and coverage of the outcome in our courses for further improvement. |
Please summarize the data you have collected this semester/academic year. |
. The Department annually reviews syllabi to verify that they contain statements of goals, objectives and evaluation criteria. . We are already (and will continue) to gather and analyze the success rates of students who attend our stretch program. We need to compare these rates with cohorts of students coming back from Ivy Tech, students who went through our regular remedial program, and students who took general education math classes immediately. Currently we don’t have enough data for all of these cohorts to be compared with any level of confidence. |
Please describe any programmatic changes you have made or are planning to make based on the data you have collected. |
We continue to offer a “stretch” version of M007 Elementary Algebra since the Spring 2010. The stretch program will run its course and end in the summer 2012. For Fall 2012: We will bring two courses: A100 from South Bend (4CR) and M117 from Kokomo and Southeast (3CR) and keep the structure very similar to our current situation. |
