Independent Study (Weeknight MBA ONLY)

Weeknight MBA students who wish to explore an area in more depth seek to conduct an independent study  during their program. Please follow the process below to apply for an independent study. Students are expected to spend a minimum of 120-135 hours on a 3 credit hour Independent Study. You may earn a maximum of 6 credit hours through Independent Study.

The Process

First you need to select a research topic. Then approach a faculty member in that discipline. For example, if you select a marketing topic make an appointment to meet with a marketing professor. You'll need to discuss the topic with the professor and ask if they would be willing to supervise your Independent Study. If, after discussion with the professor they agree to supervise the Independent Study, you'll need to submit a formal Independent Study Proposal Form to the professor. Once the professor is satisfied with the proposal they will sign-off on it and pass it on to the Dean for approval. Once the Dean approves the Independent Study, the Graduate Director will notify you and you can register for BUNW F591.

Here is a summary of the process:

  • Select a research topic.
  • Schedule appointment with professor in the appropriate field of study.
  • Review your research topic with professor and ask if they will supervise.
  • Submit Independent Study Proposal Form to supervising professor.
  • Professor approves and sends to the Dean.
  • Dean approves Independent Study.
  • Graduate Director will contact you after the approval process.
  • You can now register for BUNW F591.

Independent Study Proposal Forms are to be submitted as posted in the Schedule of Classes. Forms are also available from the main office of the School of Business & Economics. You can call 219-980-6552 to request one.
