Tobacco-Free IU Northwest
IU Northwest Campus Approach to Engagement
July 11, 2007
In order to achieve high levels of compliance with the new IU Northwest Tobacco-Free Policy which will go into effect August 20, 2007, the campus leadership (chancellor, vice chancellors, deans, and directors) from August 1, 2007, to October 1, 2007, will be called upon to engage IU Northwest students, faculty, staff, and visitors to inform the campus community of:
- Awareness of a new policy;
- The importance of complying with the new policy;
- The resources available to manage behavior in light of the new policy; and
- The appropriate administrative offices to contact, when necessary, to report violations.
The Tobacco-Free Engagement Committee will meet periodically to evaluate campus compliance. In addition, the Tobacco-Free Policy and the approach toward engaging the campus regarding this policy will be evaluated every six months to determine campus and leadership satisfaction. Based upon the results of the evaluation, additional approaches to engagement will be considered.
Sample Academic and Administrative Engagement Plan
Step 1: Awareness of Policy
Post notices in building; put reminder of policy on agenda for all meetings from July through December; send out emails to departmental listservs; put link to Tobacco Free web site on department home page; make a note of the new policy on any invitations which we send out to groups who will be using department facilities; review any web site materials which may help us interpret the policy – “Managing Change” guidelines, etc
Step 2: Engagement
Develop an air of community engagement with department. Encourage members to share observations and comments regarding the policy and its effectiveness which shall be communicated to the Taskforce for evaluation. Distribute materials such as info cards where appropriate to visitors and prospective students.
