Indiana University Northwest is proud to be the host site of the annual meeting and luncheon of the Gary Chamber of Commerce scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Monday, May 14 in the Moraine Student Center. The annual luncheon serves as the venue to install new chamber officers and the board of directors.

The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., an internationally-known civil rights, religious and political icon and advocate, will be the luncheon’s keynote speaker. Jackson will address avenues for successful businesses, barriers to businesses, and the need for viable businesses in urban areas.

Jackson began his activism as a student in the summer of 1960 seeking to desegregate the local public library in Greenville, S.C., and then as a leader in the sit-in movement. In 1965, he became a full-time organizer for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Soon after, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. appointed him to direct the Operation Breadbasket program. In December of 1971, Jackson founded Operation PUSH (People United to Serve Humanity) in Chicago.

The luncheon is open to the public and costs $25 per person. The Chamber encourages pre-registration by calling (219) 885-7407. Walk-ins will be accepted, but will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

IU Northwest is a proud member of the Gary Chamber of Commerce.

The Moraine Student Center at IU Northwest is located south of the main campus parking lot. On May 14, visitor parking will be available without penalty in all campus parking areas.  Additional campus site information and directions are available at
