Theatre Northwest to delight all ages with spring production, ‘Wiley and the Hairy Man’

Theater Northwest, the performance company of the Indiana University Northwest Department of Performing Arts, invites the community for its 30th spring children’s production, ‘Wiley and the Hairy Man’ by Suzan Zedar.

The production, geared toward elementary school children and younger, takes center stage at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium in the Savannah Center. Private viewings reserved for schools and other groups begin Thursday, April 5 and run through April 20.

‘Wiley and the Hairy Man’ is the story of a little boy with big potential! Join him, his magical mother and his dutiful dog as they journey deep into the Mississippi swamp on a quest to trick the Hairy Man and become “the best conjurer in the whole southwest county.”

The cast includes: Brandon Hearne of Gary as Wiley; Phyllis Barlow of Merrillville as Momma; Ethan Gresham of Crown Point as The Hairy Man; and Robyn Rutar of Valparaiso as Dog. The Chorus includes Helena Victoria Campbell and Dominique Glass of Gary; Scott Fowler of Hammond; Lindsey Hutchins of Portage; Lexie Itczak of Lowell; and Ashley Thompson of Whiting.

The production is directed by IU Northwest Professor of Acting and Directing Mark Baer of Portage. IU Northwest Assistant Professor of Theatre Kathy Arfken of Chicago will handle set design; Professional Guest Artist Shelley Strasser Holland of Munster will design the lighting; Professional Guest Artist Rachel Sypniwski of Chicago will head up the costume design; IU Northwest staff member Tim O’Donnell of Mokena, Ill. will handle sound; Laquita Williams of Gary will serve as the stage manager; and Sophia Settle of Hammond is the assistant stage manager.

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased by contacting the Theatre Northwest box office at (219) 980-6810. Any remaining tickets may be purchased at the box office prior to the event.

The Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium is located in the Savannah Center on the southeast corner of the main campus parking lot at 33rd Avenue and Broadway in Gary.
