Indiana University Northwest’s Lady RedHawks (19-11) travel to South Dakota this weekend to defend their A.I.I. conference title against conference newcomers University of California – San Marcos (16-14) and, possibly, NAIA top-10 powerhouse Jamestown (26-3).

The 2012 State Farm Association of Independent Institutions Women’s Conference Tournament begins Friday, with second-seeded IU Northwest seeing its first action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against San Marcos. Jamestown will play at 5 p.m. against the winner of Friday night’s contest between Dakota State and Valley City State. Both semifinal winners will earn a spot in the upcoming national tournament.

The championship game on Sunday will carry a tape-delayed broadcast on Midco Sports Network.

The Lady RedHawks will contend for their third straight title in the Association of Independent Institutions, and they must win Saturday’s semifinal against San Marcos to earn a berth in their third consecutive NAIA Division II National Tournament.

“We have prepared for the past six months and have battled for the past four to put ourselves in position for this game,” said RedHawk head coach Ryan Shelton. “Our team is looking forward to the experience as well as to the opportunity to defend our A.I.I. title this weekend.”

This postseason will be the final go-round for RedHawk seniors Sharon Houston (Merrillville), Juliette Keller (Kouts), Kym Daniels (Hammond Morton), and Ashley Michalski (Lake Central). On Feb. 16, that senior group celebrated Senior Night by leading the team to a 100-35 dismantling of Moody Bible College.

The squad lost its final regular-season road game 64-48 to Rochester College (Michigan) on Feb. 18. Shelton said that loss might have helped to ground his team for the tournament following its major upset of NCAA D-I Chicago State on Feb. 1.

“I told the team that this (loss) may have been the best thing that could have happened to us,” Shelton said. “It reminds us that we have to go out every night and work hard and execute. We’re going to see some very strong teams in the conference tournament, and we need to be ready to play.”
