Indiana University Northwest regretfully announced this week the passing of custodian Mattie Mable, of Merrillville. Mable passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2011.

“Miss Mattie,” as co-workers preferred to call her, had left her post as custodian in July due to illness. While her employment is on the books officially from 2001 to 2011, Roger Thomas, custodial crew leader in the Physical Plant, said she actually served the campus for a total of 15 years, working also as a contract employee.

Mable’s daily responsibilities included the cleanliness of the third floor library, Thomas said, but she would often start her shift by making sure the face of the university, the first floor of the library building, was in tip-top shape. It’s something Thomas, her supervisor, appreciated about her.

Those who worked closely with Mable remember her perpetual smile.

Fellow custodian Ethel Merrell chuckled about how Mable was always dressed her absolute best, putting her best face forward, so to speak, just as she worked to help the campus look its best.

Despite the nature of her job, Mable came to work in her makeup, high heels and long wig, Merrell said, though she did have gym shoes in her locker for the heftiest of custodial tasks.

Her well-kept appearance seemed indicative of a favorite pastime, as co-workers recalled how she liked to go shopping.

Co-worker Ella Morgan visited Mable at her home often after she left work due to illness, bringing her fried corn, candied yams and greens.

Morgan remembers Mable as a pleasant and friendly person who never had anything negative to say.

Mable leaves behind a son, a daughter and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by another daughter.

IU Northwest extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mattie Mable.

Arrangements are pending.
