IU Northwest to host City of Gary Candidate Forum Oct. 26

Mayor and city council candidates to discuss their positions in advance of Nov. 8 election

Indiana University Northwest, in partnership with Northwest Indiana Media Group (NWIMG) is proud to present the City of Gary Candidate Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 26, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Savannah Center’s Bergland Auditorium.

Candidates in the Gary city council and mayoral races will take the stage to discuss their positions in advance of the Nov. 8 election. City council candidates will appear from 5:30 until 6:15 p.m., and mayoral candidates will appear from 6:30 until approximately 8 p.m.

Gary city council candidates consist of: (Second District) Michael Protho, Democratic candidate; Silas Wilkerson, Republican candidate); (Sixth District): Paul (Kwabena) Pratt, Independent candidate; and Toni Valeri, Republican candidate.

Mayoral candidates include Democrat Karen Freeman-Wilson, Republican Charles Smith, Jr., Independent Lavetta Sparks-Wade, and Unicratic Eddie Tarver.

Associate Professor of Political Science Marie Eisenstein,Ph.D., will moderate the city council forum, and Professor of Communication Dorothy Ige, Ph.D., who is chair of the Department of Communication, will moderate the mayoral forum.

The forum will be aired by partner station WLTH-AM (1370).

Doors to the Bergland Auditorium will open at 5 p.m. Seating is limited and will be first-come, first-served.

The NWIMG consists of the following groups: WLTH-AM, The Gary 411, and the Gary Crusader.

The Savannah Center is located in the southeast corner of the main campus parking lot at 33rd Avenue and Broadway.
