Indiana University Northwest’s sixth annual Fall Convocation will take place from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center. Keeping students’ needs central to this traditional autumn gathering, the theme for this year’s event is “Enhancing Student Success.” The keynote speaker will be Elizabeth Barkley, Ph.D. author of a recently published book entitled, “Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty.”

This year’s Convocation, “Terms of Engagement:  Understanding Student Engagement in Today’s College Classroom,” will present an educational program focused on developing strategies for maximizing student success. Barkley will address best teaching practices and ways to enhance the learning process.

Barkley is a music professor in the Fine Arts and Communication Division of Foothill College located in California. She is a nationally known scholar, educator and consultant with more than 30 years of experience as an innovative and reflective educator.

Barkley’s areas of interest include engaging students through active and collaborative learning; transforming face-to-face and online curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners; the scholarship of teaching and learning; electronic portfolios; and connecting learning goals with outcomes and assessment.

She is the recipient of several teaching awards, including California’s Professor of the Year in conjunction with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The IU Northwest campus and greater Northwest Indiana communities are encouraged to attend this illuminating academic event sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Addison Locke Roache Memorial Lectureship Fund.

A book signing and reception will follow in the Savannah Center lobby. Copies of Barkley’s book will be available for purchase in the IU Northwest Bookstore.

An IU Northwest faculty workshop will follow from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. in Savannah Center (room 205/206). The workshop, “Terms of Engagement:  Strategies for Promoting Student Engagement in Today’s College Classroom” is co-sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Innovation and Scholarship in Teaching and Learning.
