Indiana University Northwest’s Fall 2011 semester begins on Monday, Aug. 29, but not without some fun and games to welcome both new and returning students. During the first few weeks of class, the campus will be abuzz with food, games, live entertainment, and a community fundraiser benefitting the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.

Week of September 12: Back 2 School Week

The week of September 12 has been named Back 2 School Week by the Office of Student Life and Athletics. Take advantage of this week to show some school spirit, meet some friends, and learn how to become involved at IU Northwest.

From Monday, Sept. 12 through Thursday, Sept. 15 various campus organizations will have information booths set up in the Savannah/Moraine courtyard from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. IU Northwest student clubs and organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha, Student Social Workers Association, and the newly-formed Ice Hockey Club will have members present to share information about their club’s missions, upcoming meetings and events.

DJ LJ, a local disc jockey, will provide musical entertainment and karaoke at the information fair, raising excitement and getting students pumped up for the new semester.

On Tuesday, Sept. 13 join in a round of Bongo Ball Mania, a game similar in concept to paintball, but with foam balls complete with obstacles. The mania will be take place in the Savannah/Moraine courtyard from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Chill out to the sounds of ZIV, an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, in the Savannah/Moraine courtyard on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Inspired by the musical talents of Coldplay, U2, Killers, and Radiohead, the musicians will rock the RedHawks from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Ziv, the group’s founder, was born in Israel and moved to Los Angeles when he was five. As a former solo artist, Ziv wrote, produced and recorded two studio albums and one acoustic album before forming a group. The group recently released an album, ‘Symphony Heart’, and has now embarked on a four-month North American tour.

School, family, or work stress in your life? Take it out at the IU Northwest Car Smash fundraiser. The smashing event will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15 in the Savannah/Moraine courtyard. Through a cash or a non-perishable food donation, participants will get a chance to take a swing at a junked car. All donated food will benefit the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.

And, keep a lookout for some favorite backyard games taking place on campus throughout the week. Weather-permitting, the Office of Student Life and Athletics will organize games of water balloon dodge ball, and a Twister tournament.

Savannah Lobby has been designated as the rain location for all events taking place in the Savannah/Moraine courtyard.
