The Indiana University Northwest campus and the greater Northwest Indiana community are invited to view the artistic works of Alice and Howard Bjornson in the Gallery for Contemporary Art. The Beverly Shores couple will display their exhibit, entitled “Inside/Outside,” through September 24. An artists’ reception is planned for 12 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7.

The Bjornsons have been called a “hidden treasure of Northwest Indiana.”

Alice Bjornson began her career with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in textiles from the University of Georgia. Stretching her creativity to using both textiles and paint, Alice weaves wool and then paints over the textile using a very quiet and soft palette, creating a unique new work of art. Bjornson follows the line of the weave to create minimal, linear paintings.

“Her work reminds me of abstract expressionist Agnes Martin,” said Gallery Director Ann Fritz, adding that Alice’s work has garnered a large following in Europe.

Howard Bjornson received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Southern Illinois University. A successful commercial photographer, his images are frequently seen in the advertisements and catalogs of large department stores.

On exhibit will be Howard’s photographs of the Indiana Dunes. He uses a 4x5 camera view and color negative film to capture the foliage, his depictions of the weeds and brush create a textural illusion on paper.

The IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The gallery is located in the Savannah Center neighboring the IU Northwest Book Store.

The mission of the IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is to present an innovative exhibition program that complements and enhances the university’s academic offerings. Exhibit art collections are for study and research, and are also meant to educate the university community and general public about the forms and issues of contemporary and historic art from all cultures.
